DAVID SIMPSON  ARTIST STATEMENT

Background – I am known as a visual communicator of strong emotional messages in the mediums of motion pictures and photography. In the decades since I graduated from MICA (the Maryland Institute College of Art), I have been recognized for my talents as a Film Director and for bringing out the best in people in films and national advertising – especially with regard to lighting, beauty, and conveying human emotions. My film projects have won many awards and taken me on assignment to New York City, Chicago, Vancouver, BC, and other international locations. Currently I am focusing my work on nature rather than people.

How I Feel About My Work – I am passionate about sharing the way I see the world.I hope my work allows others to venture out of their daily life and into the magical beauty of nature's color and forms. My captivation with details, textures, energy and motion, when taken out of context, can invoke new perceptions that stir surprise and wonderment. Nothing is more thrilling than sharing how I view life through the energy movement of light in color and pattern.

My Process – I strive to find images that surprise both the viewer and myself. I enjoy working with larger visual concepts and then to photograph thousands of images reflecting that concept that I distill down to the core in the form of collections, books and shows. I look for similarities and congruities in nature and encourage people to think. Most of all, I want people to see from my perspective.

Current Work – During the past decade I’ve rediscovered my roots in photography while creating a photo essay published as the book, “Loch Raven” (2009). My work has been featured in many shows and has become a continuously selling catalog of landscape, nature and water photography - many of which are in corporate and private collections.  The site, www.davidsimpsonimages.com was created in this process.

Books – My photography has been the basis for three books since 2009.  “Lock Raven”, is a coffee table book featuring a reservoir north of Baltimore, MD. "Loch Raven" is now in the second printing phase and will be released in the fall of 2015 .Following on its success, I was commissioned to provide architectural and floral photographs for “The Glass House of Dreams” book by Peggy Stansbury. This book has been inducted into the permanent collection of the Enoch Pratt Library.  My most recent book is “The Swan of Lock Raven” (2015) – a smaller nature essay designed as a children’s reader.

What’s Next – More films, more stills, and more books. I envision a book that visually communicates nature as a masterful design – through the subject matter of trees, landscapes, water and abstract flora. This new work continues my love of movement and light with consideration for how to work organically.

Most of the images presented here are candidates for my upcoming projects.

Thank you for looking at my work.
